Public Links Championship |
One of the WPGA’s newest
championships is named for a top golfer of the 20’s and
30’s. Carl Kauffmann, the “Schenley Sphinx,” won the USGA
Amateur Public Links, 1927-29, and was runner-up in 1926. He
also won the 1925 West Penn Amateur, at which time the WPGA
Executive Committee banned public golfers from the
championship. Few men have ever won three straight USGA titles;
only Willie Anderson and Tiger Woods (twice) have. The Public
Links is a 36-hole stroke play competition. Naming the new event
was easy with a player like Kaufmann in our history. Started in
2000, six different players have won the title.
