Senior Amateur Championship |
Many senior
organizations began in the 1920’s, and the first West Penn
Senior Amateur was played in 1929. Two players dominated in its
first two decades with five wins each—George T. Gregg and Jim
Wells, the top winners to this day. Next with three are Phil
Saylor, Sunnehanna, Arnold Horelick, and Knox Young, Shannopin,
a top player in the 50’s and 60’s. Bob Kiersky won the 1965
crown; later that fall he won the USGA Senior Amateur at Fox
Chapel. The 18-hole competition was changed to 36 in 2000, with
the 18-hole record held by Saylor with 69 in 1998, and the
36-hole set in 2005 by Paul Schlachter with 69-68—137.
