Tournament of Champions |
The competition began in 1994 and
marks the beginning of the season. Member Club champions,
winners of Association competitions and other players of note
are invited. The trophy is named for Jack Benson, South
Hills, who won six West Penn Amateurs between 1934-54.
Sean Knapp is the event’s only multiple champion with titles in
1998, 2000, and 2001. The 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur champion,
Brookville’s Nathan Smith, won in 2005, and the 1997 USGA
Mid-Amateur runner-up, Rick Stimmel, won in 1996. The scoring
record is held by Sherman Hostetter, a Penn State standout who
won the 1977 West Penn Amateur. He carded 71-70--141 at
Edgewood in 1995.
