The Association
has participated in matches with other organizations for more
than thirty years. The newest match, started in 1994, is played
in May with the Northern Ohio Golf Association is called the
Interstate Challenge Match. Either amateurs and four senior
amateurs comprise the team. Junior boys play in the Williamson
Cup each August, with four players representing the WPGA in a
stroke play competition with eleven teams, two from Canada. In
September, the Tri-State PGA is the Association’s opponent in
the Palmer Cup with Latrobe CC being the annual site since 1995.
The Palmer team consists of ten amateurs and four senior
amateurs.
In 1996
businessman and golf philanthropist Frank B. Fuhrer agreed to
fund these matches and has continued his support now exceeding
$100,000. The teams have been named after Fuhrer with players
clothing logos embroidered with the Frank B. Fuhrer Team
designation.
The WPGA has
dominated NOGA in the Interstate Challenge, while the Tri-State
PGA has done the same in the Palmer Cup. The Williamson Cup team
has never been victorious, but have finished runner-up twice in
the last decade.
