Champions Senior Tournament of
Champions
Nathan Smith, Wildwood, won the 14th Tournament of
Champions with 66-71 - 137 while Harry Smith, Hannastown,
won the 1st Senior Tournament of Champions with a 72 on
Thursday April 26 at Hannastown Golf Club.

Fred Brand Championship Semple Century Championship

Robert Voltz and Dave Ruffaner, St. Jude,
defeated Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith, St. Jude, on
the second hole of a playoff after the two teams
tied at 144 (+4) in the Fred Brand Foursomes
Championship held at the Longue Vue Club on
Thursday, May 3.
Knapp and Smith
lead after the morning round with 70, while Voltz
and Ruffaner started with 72 and were in third
place. Robert Meyer and Robert Campbell,
Chartiers, shot 71 in the morning and were in second
place. Voltz and Ruffaner shot another 72 in
the afternoon while Knapp and Smith shot 74.
John DiMuccio and Michael Richards Jr, New Castle,
finished third at 149.

Pete Dellovade,
Rolling Hills, and Paul Swart, Nemacolin, shot a
75-73 - 148 (+8) to win the Semple Century Foursomes
Championship at Allegheny Country Club on May 10 by
two strokes of Gregor Meyer, Jr and Rick Collins,
Pittsburgh Field Club. Chick Wagner and Mark
Bope, Oakmont, shot the low round of the tournament
(71) in the second round to finish tied for third at
151 with Mike Capoits, Lake View, and Tom Wedzik,
Kahkwa. Capotis and Wedzik had led after a 72
in the morning.
Brad McKean and
Al Beeken, Longue Vue, tied with Stephen Foster
and George Rask, Diamond Run, for first place in
the Senior Division at 153 (+13).

Mid-Amateur
Championship
Nathan Smith,
Pittsburgh,
the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur champion, won his second
straight WPGA Mid-Am, firing 66-66-132 at The Country
Club,
Meadville,
on May 31. Smith edged four-time
champion Sean Knapp, Oakmont, by two strokes, as Knapp
recorded 70-64—134. Third was
Meadville’s
Scott
Phillis,
the 2005 West Penn Amateur winner, with 70-68—138.
Smith’s 132 was one stroke from Knapp’s 64-67—131 Mid-Am
record, in 1994 at
Beaver
Lakes.
Knapp’s 64 equaled his first round score of 1994.
All three leaders, Smith at 132, Knapp at 134,
and Phillis at 138, are
among the top five scores recorded in the 22-
year history of this
championship. Knapp’s winning 131 at
Beaver
Lakes
and 137 at Fox Chapel in 1999 are the other two.
Smith
also won this spring’s Tournament of Champions at
Hannastown with 66-71—137
beating 2006 West Penn Amateur champion William
MIiller by three strokes.

Boys Championship Junior
Championship

Ian
Bangor of Moon Township made birdie on the first playoff
to win the 2007 WPGA Boys Championship at Rolling Hills
Country Club in a three-way playoff over defending
champion, Tyber Lustig of Belle Vernon and Robbie Denove
of Pittsburgh. All three posted scores of 76 to force
the hole-by-hole playoff. Finishing tied for fourth with
77 was Casey Courneen of Sewickley, Corey Martinez of
Venetia, Ryan Prokay of Grove City, and Easton Renwick
of Punxsutawney. |

A three-way playoff concluded the
87th WPGA Junior Championship held at New Castle Country Club on
June 11. Brandon Pompeani of Aliquippa was crowned champion
after the playoff. Pompeani recorded scores of 75-74--149.
Finishing tied for second were Bo Lustig, Belle Vernon, who
recorded scores of 74-75--149, and Gregor Orlando or Erie, who
posted scores of 76-73--149.
Orlando was eliminated from the
playoff with a bogey on the second playoff hole, and Lustig fell
to Pompeani after making bogey on the third and final playoff
hole. Pompeani parred all three and kept the playoff going by
making a delicate chip on the second playoff hole from behind
the green that rolled down to within inches of the hole.
Fifty-one players completed the
championship. Finishing fourth was Michael Klaric, III, of
Hermitage (75-75--150), followed by Grant Martens of Allison
Park (79-75--154) in fifth and Donny Lewis in sixth
(81-74--155).

In the 13 and Under
Division, Tommy Nettles of McMurray recorded a score of
80. Finishing second with a score of 84 was Matthew
Zerishnek fo Coraopolis, follwed by Ben DuCarme of
McMurray with an 88. Last year, Tommy's brother Chuck
won the C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational. |

Senior
Championship
Don
Erickson, III, DuBois, who
recently turned 55, fired an even par-72 in his second
round for 148, on 76-72 to win the West Penn Senior
Amateur Championship. He defeated
Paul Schlachter,
Bridgeville, the nation’s #1 ranked senior amateur in
Golfweek Magazine’s
rankings, by three strokes. Schlachter
shot 78-73—151. Erickson is no
stranger to championship golf. He
has won the 1988 Pennsylvania State Amateur, the 1999
WPGA Tournament of Champions, and has qualified for
fifteeen USGA Amateurs and
Mid-Amateurs.
Erickson and Schlachter
played in the same group. In the
second round, Schlachter
took the lead after shooting a four-under par 32 on the
back nine, and was two strokes ahead of Erickson with
seven holes to play. Play was
interrupted for 45 minutes due to lightning.
When play resumed,
Schlachter bogeyed five of his last seven, while
Erickson played those holes in one over par for his
first WPGA title since 1999. Tied
for third at 153 were two
Johnstown
golfers, both members at Sunnehanna
CC who each recorded 75-78—former champion Phil Saylor
(’01 & ’04) and Michael Smith.
Other
flight winners were Saylor, 60-64, and Don Lamb,
Pittsburgh,
65 & above, 77-81—158.

Amateur
Championship
Open Championship
|
Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh,
defeated Mike Van Sickle, Gibsonia, in a playoff by
birdieing the first hole at Sunnehanna Country Club to
win the West Penn Amateur. Van Sickle had held the
overnight lead after rounds of 65-72--137
(-3)on Monday,
June 25. Smith was in second place going into the
final round after rounds of 69-70--139 (-1). In
the final round Smith shot 67 while Van Sickle carded a
69 to finish tied at 206 (-4). Both players hit
good drives down the right side of the first fairway.
After Smith hit his second to approximately 8 feet, Van
Sickle responded with one to 6 feet. Smith made
the sidehill putt, but Van Sickle was unable to match
him. The win gave Smith two records
in WPGA history. (more)

Dan Thompson, an Indiana CC
assistant and former Indiana University, PA, golfer, won
the West Penn Open at Nemacolin
Woodlands Resort’s Mystic Rock Course, a recent PGA Tour
site. Thompson prevailed in a
hole-by-hole playoff on the second hole. He edged
amateur Sean
Knapp, Oakmont, with a par after Knapp bogied the 440
yard hole
after missing the green to the left
with his second. Thompson’s regulation par gave him the

Women's Amateur Championship
Katie
Trotter of Pittsburgh became the first woman to win the
West Penn Women's Amateur for the second time. Trotter,
who won the Women's Amateur in 2005 at Edgewood Country
Club, shot a 76 (+4) at Hannastown Golf Club on Tuesday,
June 19 to win by one stroke over Dawn Manges, South
Connelsville. Keri Cooney, Erie, was the winner of the
Net division.

Father/Son Championship Parent/Child
Championship

Greg Fritz, the head professional at Pinecrest Country
Club, Brookville, and his son Michael combined for a 66
(-5) to win the Father /Son Championship at Green Oaks
Country Club. David and Justin Scott, Edgewood,
finished second with a 69 (-2). The Fritz's made two
eagles in their round including a second shot hole out
on the first hole by Greg.

Samantha and Larry Milosh, Aliquippa, won their third
Parent/Child Championship with a
72 (+1) at Green Oaks Country Club. Jordan and
Judy-Lynn
Craig, Connellsville, finished
second. |

whose resume includes two

match play titles, one stroke play championship, and
twice a sectional qualifier for the USGA Amateur Public
Links, won the WPGA Public Links Championship on July 16
at Cedarbrook GC in Belle
Vernon. Coleman shot 72-73—145 on
Cedarbrook’s Gold Course to
edge Brendan Madden, Jefferson Hills,
a
Duquesne
University
golfer. Madden recorded 72-74—146.
Finishing third was Stan
Namola, Beaver, with 73-75—148.
The win was Coleman’s first in a WPGA conducted
championship. Key to his victory was
recording three deuces on par-three holes over the two
rounds.
