Course Rating® Program

Section 12-1 of the USGA Handicap System describes the importance of having a permanent marker as a starting point for the Course Rating Process.

The WPGA is authorized by the United States Golf Association to rate golf clubs in its jurisdiction. Both Member Clubs and non-member clubs are rated each year, with approximately 25 courses being completed each year.

During the Course Rating process, the golf course is measured from tee to green and rated by a group of trained WPGA volunteers and staff. The Association then computes a USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating® for each set of tees and the applicable gender. Each Course Rating™ is issued on the first business day of the month following completion of the services.

There is no fee for Course Rating™ and course measuring services for WPGA Member Clubs. The Association does charge a nominal fee to non-member clubs for these services.

The Association's Course Rating® Program comprises eight teams located geographically throughout Western Pennsylvania and approximately 50 volunteers. The WPGA rates its Member Clubs on a six year rotating schedule, or when changes have been made due to construction. Each golf club must have a Course Rating® issued at least every ten years to meet its requirements to the USGA Handicap System.
