The predecessor to Montour Heights C.C. was the Sunset Golf Club which opened in 1911. The course was laid out on the property of Robert Tener.
The Club was reorganized in 1917 as the Montour Heights Country Club. In 1919 the Club acquired the Willis King property that permitted improvement to the nine hole course and the conversion of the King's fine home into a club house. The club house was used until 1963 when a new clubhouse was built and the old clubhouse was razed by setting it on fire, with the help of the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department.
In 1963 the Club celebrated the opening of its new Clubhouse. The facility was improved in 1973 by the addition of the lovely Sunset dining room and bar. In 1962-63 the nine hole course was expanded to eighteen holes by the acquisition of the W.C. Moreland property. The Cherrington Corporate Center has been developed on the site of the original course.
Charles McCune, one of the oldest and most influential members of Montour passed away in 1979. His estate was left to the McCune Foundation for charitable purposes. The McCune foundation donated the 184 acre McCune summer home to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy which imposed conservation easements and sold it to the Country Club in 1984. The extensively expanded and renovated McCune mansion and the championship Pete and P.B. Dye designed course opened in 1987.
