Information on Amateur Championship

164 golfers have entered the 2004 West Penn Amateur, to be played at
Nemacolin Country Club, in Beallsville, south of Pittsburgh, June 28-29.
Contestants play 36 holes the first day with the low 32 and ties
returning for the final round. The field is typical other than 1999,
when 260 entered for the championship at Oakmont Country Club.
Preliminary qualifying rounds are scheduled
as follow:
Tuesday, June 8--Shannopin Country Club,
Pittsburgh (48 players for 17 spots)
Wednesday, June 9--Lone Pine Golf Club, Washington (47 players for 17 spots)
Wednesday, June 9--Lake Shore Country Club, Erie (19 players for 7 spots)
Thursday, June 17--Sinking Valley Country Club, Altoona (23 players for 7 sots)

Qualifiers will join exempt players
at Nemacolin headed by 1998 (Kahkwa), 1999 (Oakmont), 2000 (Sunnehanna),
2001 (Butler), 2002 (Lake View, Erie), and defending champion
(Westmoreland), Sean Knapp of Oakmont. His six straight are an all-time
record, eclipsing Arnold Palmer (49-52) and Bob Reilly (60-63). The
other former champion in the field is Marshall Marraccini, McKeesport,
'83 and '90. Pennsylvania Amateur champs entered are Don Erickson, III,
DuBois, '88, John Jones, Lower Burrell, '94, Paul Schlachter,
Bridgeville, '98 and Knapp, '97, plus West Penn Open winnders, Jones,
'94, and Arnold Cutrell, Greensburg, '90.
WPGA Mid-Amateur champs entered include Knapp
(5 titles), Jones (3), 2001 champ Jeff Riems, Monroeville, 2002 titleist
Marshall Marraccini, McKeesport, 2003 champ, David Brown, Upper St. Clair, and
this year's winner, Arnold Cutrell. Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur champs are Jim
Bryan, Latrobe (00-01) and Knapp, '96 and '97, plus 2001 WPGA Junior Champion
Bennett Smith, Bakerstown.
