Justin Smith wins second Fuhrer Award
July 8, 2004
Jeff Rivard, Executive Director (contact)

Franklin's Justin Smith has been named the area's outstanding collegiate player for the 2003-04 season. Smith, whose career concluded this spring for the University of Minnesota Gophers, was named All Big-Ten for the third time and also an All-American. He wins the third edition of the Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, named for the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill standout of the 1980's. Smith won two collegiate competitions this season, tied for second in the Big Ten Championship, and he recorded seven top ten finishes during the Gopher's strong schedule, resulting in his unanimous Big Ten, First Team, selection. Smith averaged 72.25 for 36 rounds, leading the team in scoring. His best round was 65, had six rounds in the 60's, 16 under par, and 29 of 36 at 75 or better. His best 54 hole total was 208. He is likely to join the professional ranks at the end of the summer.
