May 16, 2005
Jeff Rivard, Executive Director (contact)
William E. McTurk, who assisted the Association
in conducting Penn State's Rutherford Invitiational, died on May 12, when his
car rolled over on Interstate 81 in Virginia. He was 79.
McTurk, a native of Pittsburgh, graduated from
Penn State in 1948 in chemical engineering. He had a long and successful
career with Exxon as a public affairs officer. After retiring, he and his
wife, Lois Brand McTurk, lived in Scarsdale, New York, but moved to State
College in 1997, where they could be close to their alma mater. In 1999, the McTurks
donated $400,000 to Penn State University's Center of the Performing Arts.
The couple gave much to the game. Bill was
an Executive Committee member of the Metropolitan (NY) Golf Association, and Lois
was president of the Women's
Metropolitan GA and a member of the USGA Women's Committee. They quickly accepted the WPGA's request for helping at
the Rutherford, where Bill served for several years as a starter.
The McTurks were traveling back to State College
after the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary at the Greenbrier Resort
in West Virginia. Mrs. McTurk was not injured in the accident.
