Rathfon named top collegiate player

The WPGA Championship Committee has selected Ben Rathfon, Allegheny College, as
the recipient of the Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, as the top college player in the
Association during the 2004-05 season. Rathfon, who graduated on May
15 with a degree in political science, is from Clarion, a graduate of North
Clarion County HS.

Rathfon is a four time NCAA Division III All-American, including a 3rd team
selection this season, and an All Region player. He won four tournaments this
season, recorded ten finishes in the top ten in twelve events, and recorded a
75.3 scoring average with a low round of 68. He was named the North Coast
Athletic Conference's Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Previous winners were Justin Smith, Minnesota in '01-'02 and '03-'04; and Matt
Guyton, Clarion, '02-'03. The award is named after Frank Fuhrer, III, an
All-American and All ACC selection during his career at the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, 1978-82. Fuhrer also won the 1981 Western Amateur, and
was a member of the 1981 Walker Cup team. During the 1981 season, he was ranked
#2 among amateurs in the USA. Fuhrer played the PGA Tour for several seasons,
and has won six different WPGA championships, eleven titles in all. |
