November 18, 2005
Jeff Rivard, Executive Director (contact)

Finishing their rounds on October 20, well before the arrival of Hurricane Wilma in Florida, Washington's Steve Wheatcroft, and Brookville's Nathan Smith, advanced to the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying. In Palm City at Martin Downs CC's Osprey Course, Wheatcroft shot 69-70-66-70--275, finishing fourth, and Smith carded 68-68-71-74--281, qualifying right on the number.

Wheatcroft, who won the 2004 West Penn Open, enjoyed a successful year on Florida mini-tours with four wins and well over $100,000 in earnings, while Smith, the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur champion, was WPGA's 2005 Player of the Year. Among his achievements, Smith won the 2005 Frank Fuhrer Invitational by six strokes defeating the area's top professionals. Franklin's Justin Smith played in the first stage at Jennings Mill CC, Bogart, Georgia, October 11-14. His 70-69-71-70--280 was one short of the cut.
