Ten area golfers qualify for USGA Open Sectional Qualifiers

A total of ten golfers from the area have qualified for the Sectional Qualifiers for the US Open.

Five golfers made it through local qualifying for the 2006 US Open at Quicksilver Golf Club May 18. One more golfer qualified at Scotch Valley Country Club on May 22. In addition, four other players qualified at other sites across the country.

Kevin Shields, Ryan Sikora, Robert McClellan, Sean Farren, and Gordon Vietmeier qualified at Quicksilver. Results.

Frank Fairman, Punxsutawney was the medalist at Sctoch Valley. Results.

At Cherry Valley Club, Garden City, NY, Steve Wheatcroft, Washington, the 2004 West Penn Open champion, advanced through the USGA Open Local on May 10 with 70. On May 15, Pittsburgh's Bob Friend was medalist with 69 at Shark's Tooth GC, Lake PPowell, Florida, while Franklin's Justin Smith, qualified with 70 at Maumee Bay State Park GC, near Toledo, Ohio. Brian Cooper of Pittsburgh, shot 68 to qualify at Southern Dunes in Phoenix, AZ on May 15.

Both Friend and Wheatcroft advanced through Locals in 2005 as well.
