Waynesburg’s Robert Rohanna, who recently
completed his sophomore year, was named the 2005-06 recipient of the
WPGA’s Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, for being the area’s outstanding
collegiate player the past season.
Rohanna, who played #1 for the Nittany Lions most
of the year, had a 72.8 scoring average over 21 rounds. His finishes
included three top tens and 14th in the Big Ten Championships. He had
the highest national ranking in Golfweek magazine.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Pittsburgh’s
Mark Cimarolli, Ohio, and Wexford’s Mike Van Sickle, Marquette.
Cimarolli won the Big East/MAC collegiate and was
named second team All-Conference in the Mid-American. Cimarolli’s
scoring average for nineteen rounds was 73.7.
Wexford’s Mike VanSickle, who plays at Marquette,
recorded several top ten finishes. His scoring average for 32 rounds was
73.53.
The award is named after Frank Fuhrer, III, whose
numerous collegiate honors at the University of North Carolina, Chapel
Hill, including three ACC All-Conference team selections. Fuhrer was
ranked #2 in Division I in 1980-81, won the 1981 Western Amateur and was
named to the USGA’s Walker Cup team that summer.
All three players are exempt from qualifying in
the upcoming West Penn Amateur, to be played to Fox Chapel, June 26-27.
