Steve Wheatcroft and Justin Smith advance to PGA Tour finals |

Two area golfers advanced to the PGA Tour Qualifying School Finals to be
played November 29-December 4 at the PGA West Stadium Courses in
LaQuinta, California. Steve Wheatcroft, Washington, made the finals for
the second straight year, while Justin Smith, Franklin, advances for the
first time.
Wheatcroft, the 2004 West Penn Open champion, and a collegiate standout
at Indiana University, where he made All Big-Ten, tied for first in
stage one with Mark Turnesa at the Osprey Creek Course, Martin Downs,
Florida, with 65-70-72-67--274. In the second stage at Lake Jovita CC,
Dade City, Florida, he carded 70-66-71-69--276, tying for tenth and
making the cut by two strokes.
Smith, a University of Minnesota standout, also an All Big-Ten player,
was the recipient of the Association's Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, as the
area's outstanding collegiate player, being honored in 2002 and 2004.
In stage one at Florence CC, South Carolina, Smith fired
69-70-67-68--274, finishing second two strokes behind Tommy Gainey. At
Hombre GC in Panama City, Florida in the second stage, Smith birdied the
final hole to avoid a playoff and qualify right on the number of
288--72-70-74-72.
