Although the USGA's regulations
regarding Amateur Status have changed most notably in recent
years, the basic definition of an amateur golf remains--"an
'amateur golfer' is one who plays the game as a non-remunerative
and non-profit-making sport and who does not receive
remuneration for teaching golf or for other activities because
of golf skill or reputation, except as provided in the Rules."
The WPGA works with the USGA on
amateur status. Area reinstatements are reviewed here prior to
the USGA's final approval. If a questionable event, usually one
played for cash prizes, reaches us, we contact the event and
forward information to the USGA. Primarily, the WPGA informs
golfers about the do's and don'ts of retaining Amateur Status.
Several prominent amateur golfers have lost amateur status,
including Harvie Ward as the reigning US Amateur champion in
1957; those who believe either the WPGA or USGA will overlook a
violation are sorely mistaken. We encourage anyone with
questions to contact our office.

been reinstated to amateur status within the past two years.
