John W. "Jack" Brand, a legendary name in Western Pennsylvania
golf, died in St. Petersburg, Florida on January 27, at the age of 87.
Jack was the son of longtime Allegheny CC golf professional, Fred.
His
brother Fred, Jr., who passed away in 1998, was a USGA Executive Committee member who
received the 1997 Bob Jones Award. Jack
Brand attended Penn State University, where he captained the
1941 golf team, as had his older brother before him.
An Association Centennial History Maker, Jack won four WPGA
Four-Ball titles, three with fellow Nittany Lion and Oakmont
member, Jack Mahaffey. He and brother Fred founded the popular
Fred Brand Foursomes Championship in 1954. Jack also was deeply
involved in organizing the game, serving as President of both
the Pennsylvania Golf Association and WPGA (1966, 1974). Long a
member at Oakmont, he chaired or co-chaired the 1962 & 1973 US
Opens, 1969 US Amateur, and 1978 PGA Championship. In addition
he served the USGA as a longtime member of their Sectional
Affairs Committee.
