Nathan Smith,
the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur champion and defending West Penn
Mid-Am winner, heads a strong field of 72 for this year's
version at The Country Club, Meadville, on May 31. Smith, an
NCAA Division III All-American for Allegheny College, is very
familiar with The Country Club, Allegheny's home course. Last
year's runner-up and 2005 West Penn Am Champion, Scott Phillis,
Meadville, lost to Smith in a playoff at Nevillewood. The
former Penn State golf team captain is a member at the host
site. Another former Allegheny College standout, John Jones,
has won three Mid-Ams in 1992, 1996 and 2000.
Other WPGA and
Pennsylvania GA individual tournament winners in the field
include John Benson, Punxsutawney, David Brown, Upper St. Clair,
Jim Bryan, Latrobe, Don Erickson, III, Dubois, Sean Knapp,
Oakmont and Paul Schlachter, Bridgeville. Former Erie District
champions include Ron Coleman and Dave Hewett.
The Country Club is a par-72
layout that plays just under 6600 yards.
