Nathan Smith,
Pittsburgh,
the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur champion, won his second straight WPGA
Mid-Am, firing 66-66-132 at The Country Club,
Meadville,
on May 31. Smith edged four-time champion
Sean Knapp, Oakmont, by two strokes, as Knapp recorded
70-64—134. Third was
Meadville’s
Scott
Phillis,
the 2005 West Penn Amateur winner, with 70-68—138.
Smith’s 132
was one stroke from Knapp’s 64-67—131 Mid-Am record, in 1994 at
Beaver
Lakes.
Knapp’s 64 equaled his first round score of 1994.
All three leaders, Smith at 132, Knapp at 134, and
Phillis at 138, are among the top
five scores recorded in the 22- year
history of this championship. Knapp’s
winning 131 at
Beaver
Lakes
and 137 at Fox Chapel in 1999 are the other two.
Smith also won
this spring’s Tournament of Champions at
Hannastown with 66-71—137 beating 2006 West Penn Amateur
champion William MIiller by three
strokes.
