Van Sickle's 60 New Amateur
Record
June 20, 2007

When William Miller, Venetia,
fired 62 at Fox Chapel last summer in the West Penn Amateur
on his way to the title, he set a Fox Chapel course record
and WPGA standard for the competitive lowest round ever by
an amateur in this area. Less than a year later Mike
VanSickle, Gibsonia, shot 60 on June 19 in the second round
in the Tri-State Amateur at Chestnut Ridge Resort's Tom's
Run Course to lower that record by two strokes.
Van Sickle, who plays at
Treesdale in Gibsonia, had a terrific collegiate year at
Marquette University with three victories and selections as
All Big East first team and Honorable Mention All-American.
He missed the playoff number for the US Open Sectional in
Columbus by one stroke. He is the co-recipient of the
2006-07 Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, for the WPGA's outstanding
collegiate player, sharing it with Penn State's Robert
Rohanna, Waynesburg.
VanSickle had a chance for 59.
After hitting a big drive to the reachable par five 18th, he
missed the green to the left, and missed a five foot putt
for the birdie and 59.
