Nathan Smith Wins West Penn Amateur, Joins Two Exclusive WPGA Clubs
June 27, 2007
Jeff, Rivard, Executive Director

Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, overcame a two-shot deficit going into the final round to catch Mike Van Sickle, Gibsonia, at the 107th West Penn Amateur contested at Sunnehanna Country Club June 25-26 and then defeated him in a playoff with a birdie at the first hole.  By doing so, Smith gained two historical distinctions: the first player to win the Tournament of Champions, Mid-Amateur and Amateur in the same year, and the second player to win 7 different WPGA Championships.

In addition to the three listed above, Smith's titles are the C.R. Miller (Junior) Match Play, WPGA Junior, Fred Brand Foursomes (with Sean Knapp), the Four-Ball (with Scott Phillis).

Marshall Marraccini, has also won seven different WPGA Championships: Amateur, Open, Mid-Amateur, Club Champions, Fred Brand, Four-Ball and Father/Son.

Smith was previously tied with Frank Fuhrer, III and John Jones with six different wins.  Fuhrer's six are the C.R. Miller, Junior, Amateur, Open, Mid-Amateur and Fred Brand, while Jones has won the Junior, Open, Mid-Amateur, Father & Son, Four-Ball and Fred Brand.

Next is Sean Knapp with five -- Tournament of Champions, Mid-Amateur, Amateur, Fred Brand and Four-Ball
