Four-time champion Carol Semple Thompson, advanced to the third round in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur, played at the Sunriver Resort’s Meadow Course in Oregon.  Thompson, who won four straight titles, 1999-2002, including the 2001 edition at her home club, Allegheny CC in Sewickley, qualified easily for match play with 77-74—151, tied for ninth.

In the first round, she beat Kathleen Hunt, Buffalo, NY, 3 & 2.

In round two, Carol faced longtime friend Connie Shorb, York, PA.  Shorb was two-up after twelve holes, but Thompson rallied, as she often does in match play.  She won three of the final six hole, including a winning par on #18, to defeat Shorb, one-up.

Her third round opponent, Lisa Smego, Olympia, WA, prevailed.  Smego held a two-up lead most of the match until Carol birdied #17.  Both players parred the final hole, giving Smego the victory.

Thompson will compete September 29-October 4 in the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur at Desert Forest GC, Carefree, Arizona.
