Carol Semple Thompson reaches 3rd
round in USGA Senior Women's

Four-time
champion Carol Semple Thompson,
advanced to the third round in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur,
played at the Sunriver Resort’s
Meadow Course in
Oregon.
Thompson, who won four straight titles, 1999-2002,
including the 2001 edition at her home club, Allegheny CC in
Sewickley, qualified easily for match play with 77-74—151, tied
for ninth.
In the first
round, she beat Kathleen Hunt,
Buffalo,
NY,
3 & 2.
In round two,
Carol faced longtime friend Connie Shorb,
York,
PA.
Shorb was two-up after twelve
holes, but Thompson rallied, as she often does in match play.
She won three of the final six hole,
including a winning par on #18, to defeat
Shorb, one-up.
Her third
round opponent, Lisa Smego,
Olympia,
WA,
prevailed. Smego
held a two-up lead most of the match until Carol birdied #17.
Both players parred the final
hole, giving Smego the victory.
Thompson will
compete September 29-October 4 in the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur
at Desert Forest GC, Carefree,
Arizona.
