Marino Parascenzo, the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette's lead golf writer for 37 years, is the recipient
of the PGA of America's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.
The Ellwood City native, who still
resides there with his wife Leona, is a 1957 graduate of Penn
State University, following a stint in the United States Air
Force. His first newspaper job was with the Ellwood City Ledger.
Upon moving to the "P-G" in 1964, he covered many sports
including all three Pittsburgh's professional sports
teams--Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins, plus college sports with
Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Duquesne. He retired from the
Post-Gazette in 2001, and he has stayed active with numerous
freelance articles, features, and books.
Not only did Parascenzo cover major
golf, more than sixty championships, and numerous PGA Tour
stops, he is a fixture in local golf, on hand for numerous
Tri-State PGA and Western Pennsylvania GA competitions. He
regularly attends Tri-State and WPGA dinners and similar
functions that honor area golfers at season's end. Among his
numerous freelance projects include a feature on Arnold Palmer
for the WPGA Centennial book and editing Oakmont 100 Years-The
History of Oakmont Country Club. He has written for most major
golf organizations and publications as a freelancer.
The Tri-State PGA recognized
Parascenzo with the Distinguished Service Award in 1997.
His interest in the future of sports
writing is underscored by his founding of the Golf Writers
Association of America Journalism Scholarship Program. His fund
raising has yielded nearly a million dollars for this cause. He
is a past president of the GWAA.
