Cutrell, Schlachter, sweep State Match Play events

Arnold Cutrell
won his third Jay Sigel Match Play Championship conducted by the
Pennsylvania Golf Association, while Paul Schlachter won his
first in the senior division of the Sigel. Both were played at
Stonewall GC in Elverson, near Philadelphia, on May 10-11.
Cutrell beat
Eric Williams in the final, 5 & 4, while Schlachter defeated Tom
Bartolacci, 3 & 1, in his finals.
Other area
players in the Sigel were Frank Fairman, Punxsutawney; Adam
Hofmann, Oakmont; Sean Knapp, St. Jude/Longue Vue; and David
Brown, St. Clair. All but Fairman won their first round matches
and lost in the second.
Area senior
players were Schlachter, Ed Strickler, Huntingdon; Joe Cordaro,
Nevillewood; Don Erickson, III, DuBois; John Benson,
Punxsutawney, and Bill Baloh, Hannastown. Erickson and Benson
joined Schlachter in the semi-finals, where Benson, the
defending champion, lost to Bartolacci, while Schlachter
defeated Erickson. This was Schlachter’s seventh state title,
and his first senior match play.
