144 enter West Penn Amateur Championship

Defending champion Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur Champion leads a field of 144 players into the 2008 West Penn Amateur to be played June 23-24, at the Bedford Springs Resort in Bedford.  

The starting field of 78 will be identified through exemptions and qualifying rounds at four sites

            June 3—Cedarbrook (Gold Course), Belle Vernon—62 players for 24 spots

            June 4—Iron Masters, Roaring Spring—14 players for 5 spots

            June 12—Seven Oaks, Beaver—30 players for 12 spots

            June 12—Lake View, Erie—11 players for 4 spots

Joining Smith, who won the Tournament of Champions, Mid-Amateur and Amateur in 2007, are Sean Knapp, Oakmont, who won six straight Amateurs, 1998-2003, and this year’s West Penn Mid-Amateur, 2006 Amateur champion William Miller, Venetia, and Sean Brannan, Hollidaysburg, a semi-finalist in the 2007 USGA Junior Amateur Championship.
