Van Sickle wins Fuhrer Award

Mike VanSickle,
Gibsonia, whose home club is Treesdale G&CC, was named recipient of
the 2007-08 Frank Fuhrer, III, Award, as the outstanding college
golfer in Western Pennsylvania. VanSickle, a senior this
August, plays for Marquette University in Milwaukee. During his
junior year, he won two tournaments in Florida, the Big
East/Mid-American Challenge in Orlando, University of South
Florida’s in Tampa, tied for first in the Windon Memorial near
Chicago, recorded numerous rounds in the 60’s and several top
tens, compiled a 71.3 scoring average for 39 rounds, was ranked
29th nationally, and named an Honorable Mention
All-American.
In 2006-07,
VanSickle shared the Fuhrer Award with Waynesburg’s Robert
Rohanna, who played for Penn State University. Rohanna finished
second to VanSickle this season with highlights including two
wins, including Penn State’s Rutherford Intercollegiate, and
second place in the NCAA Central Regional at Ohio State
University’s Scarlet Course that led the Nittany Lions to the
NCAA Championships.
The award is
named after Frank Fuhrer, III, Pittsburgh, whose outstanding
collegiate career at the University of North Carolina—Chapel
Hill, including selections as a three-time All Atlantic Coast
Conference and All-American golfer, 1979-81. Winner of the 1981
Western Amateur, he was the #2 ranked amateur in the country and
was named to the USGA’s 1981 Walker Cup team. Fuhrer, who
played professional golf for nearly a decade before being
reinstated to amateur golf, has won eleven competitions
conducted by the WPGA. He qualified for numerous USGA
championships, reaching the quarter-finals in the 1996
Mid-Amateur. He is a senior executive with Frank Fuhrer
Wholesale, a beverage distributor. |
