Robert Rohanna,
Waynesburg, a Penn State University standout whose Nittany Lion
career concluded this Spring, shot 71-69—140 on PSU’s Blue
Course to take medalist honors in the USGA Amateur Sectional
Qualifying Rounds on July 22. Rohanna, who qualified for match
play the previous week in the USGA Amateur Public Links
Championship, has advanced to both the Amateur Public Links and
Amateur in ’07 and ‘08. In the APL, Rohanna won his first round
match and lost in the second round.
His cousin
Rachel qualified for match play at the USGA Girls Junior, July
21-22, recording 72-73—145, at Hartford (CT) Golf Club.
The second
qualifier, Keith Stauffer, Bradford, 44, shot 70-71—141 to gain
the second spot at the Blue Course, beating many college
players, including five from the Penn State team. This is the
second time Stauffer has qualified for the Amateur, the other in
1986, 22 years ago. Stauffer comes from a golf family; his
brothers, Kent and Kirk, both club and teaching professionals,
have their strong resumes. Stauffer, on the staff of the
Federal Prison in Bradford, also coaches golf at University of
Pittsburgh-Bradford. Educated at Indiana University, PA, he was
in the starting lineup of one of IUP’s better teams. He roomed
with Sean Knapp, nine time WPGA Player of the Year, who took up
golf in college, after beginning in IUP athletics as a
basketball player.
