After
qualifying solidly for the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship at
Hartford Golf Club (CT) with 72-73—145, Waynesburg’s Rachel
Rohanna drew the last tee time in the first round on July 23
against Julie Yang, Phoenix, who qualified at 149. The cut was
151. Rohanna was seeded #23, Yang, #45. After several weather
delays in this rain plagued championship, Rohanna began her
match in the late afternoon at 4:51.
Playing well
through the first twelve holes, two under par with routine
concessions, Rohanna opened a four-up lead. Yang won four of
the next five holes to square the match, before darkness
prevailed. Their match was the only one not to finish.
Returning the next morning, July 24, the duo halved the 18th
hole with pars, then tied the next three holes with bogey, par,
and double bogey. Yang parred the fourth extra hole to win
the match in 22 holes.
The Rohanna-Yang
match was the only one played today, as the USGA suspended
second round matches for the rest of the day. However, Rohanna
and Yang agreed to play this morning in difficult conditions to
finish the first round schedule.
