Recovering from an opening round 74, Gibsonia’s Mike VanSickle, then fired 69-68—for a two-under par total of 211 at Bethlehem’s Saucon Valley CC’s Old Course.  VanSickle edged Pittsburgh’s Nathan Smith, who recorded 212 on 71-71-70.  Smith, who has won this year’s West Penn Amateur and Open, has two straight runner-up finishes, losing last year to Pittsburgh’s Adam Hofmann at Longue Vue in Verona on the final hole.  VanSickle won the 2007 Pennsylvania Open, and thus joins a select group of golfers who have won both titles.

Other area golfers in the top ten are Robert Rohanna, Waynesburg, t-4; Adam Hofmann, Pittsburgh, t-6; plus Dan Obremski, Hannastown and Frank Fairman, Punxsutawney, t-10.
