When Arnold
Cutrell, Totteridge, eagled the 593-yard par-five first hole at
Treesdale G&CC, he and partner Jim Bryan, Latrobe, sustained
their strong start with 28-33—61, a new record in the WPGA
Four-Ball. On the first nine, Cutrell added two birdies, while
Bryan contributed four to reach 28. The 61 gave them a four
stroke lead over 2003 champions, Malcolm Spatz, Oakmont, and
Jonathan Thomas, Pittsburgh Field Club, with whom they were
paired.
Things changed
in the afternoon, as Cutrell/Bryan faltered to 38 on the first
nine, while Spatz/Thomas shot 34, leaving the teams tied with
nine holes to play. The teams were still tied after 15, when
Cutrell/Bryan birdied the final three, while Spatz/Thomas
birdied the last, giving Bryan/Cutrell 61-72—133, while Spatz/Thomas
carded 65-70—135, to finish first and second.
Cutrell/Bryan’s
61 beat several teams that had recorded 63’s. For Bryan, it was
his third Four-Ball title, each with a different partner—1997 at
Greensburg with Don Erickson, III, 2000 at Grove City with Jack
Cline, and this one with Cutrell, who also has three titles,
1986 at Green Oaks, and 1988 at Butler, both with Bill Baloh,
Herminie.
