Sean Knapp,
Oakmont, won his quarter-final match in the USGA Mid-Amateur
Championship this morning at Milwaukee Country Club, defeating
Jimmy Chestnut, Grand Blanc, MI, 2 & 1. In a match where both
players were off form, Knapp rallied from a 3-down margin,
winning the last four holes.
Knapp
qualified easily for match play, shooting 68-74—142. He then
beat Eric Spencer, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 2-up, Ryan McDonald,
Rocklin, CA, 1-up, and Josh Gregory, Augusta, GA, 1-up.
Also
qualifying for match play was 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur Champion,
Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, with 70-71—141. He lost in the first
round to Todd Mitchell, Bloomington, IN, one-up, losing #17 &
#18, after taking the lead on #16.
Knapp faces
Mitchell in the semi-final. This is Knapp’s best showing in the
Mid-Amateur, with three other appearances in the
quarter-finals.
At the USGA
Women’s Mid-Amateur, played at Barton Hills CC, Ann Arbor,
Sewickley’s Carol Semple Thompson qualified easily with 151 as
the playoff number was 160.
She beat Mary
Jane Hiestand, Naples, FL, 2 & 1, Marci Zweifel, Orlando, 2-up,
before losing in the third round to Corrie Tayman, Bethesda, MD,
3&2.
