Since the Palmer Cup, the annual match between the
WPGA and the Tri-State Section, PGA of America,
began in 1993. the Tri-State won all of them, until
yesterday. With several close matches and leads
changing hands at Latrobe Country Club, the WPGA
managed to tie the Section at 8 ½ points each. It
was close all day as the singles points were halved,
five each, as were the afternoon Four-Ball matches
with 3 ½.
Leading the WPGA with wins in both his matches was
David Brown, St. Clair, while Gordon Vietmeier did
the same for Tri-State PGA. Three halved points
were key in the WPGA getting a tie. Robert Rohanna,
Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, birdied the 18th
hole from under a tree holing a twelve foot putt, to
tie Dennis Dolci. Trent Karlik, Highland, was two
down after 15 holes and caught Jason Martin. Nathan
Smith, Wildwood, and Jon Pratkanis, Butler, were
three down on the back nine and tied Joe Boros and
Adam Corson. Nine of the seventeen matches reached
the 18th hole.
The highlight of the day was Arnold Palmer’s playing
in the Four-Ball matches, partnered with Butler’s
Rob McClellan. Karlik and Rohanna defeated the duo,
3&1. Palmer extended the match with a winning par
on the 16th hole.
