During the
Fall Players Dinner at Montour Heights on October 2, Nathan
Smith, Pittsburgh. was named Player of the Year. Smith, a
member at Wildwood, had an outstanding season highlighted by
winning both the West Penn Amateur and West Penn Open, the
fourth player to do so. Smith also played well in major amateur
competitions like the Sunnehanna and Northeast Amateurs, and was
runner-up in both the Pennsylvania Amateur and Open, both times
to Mike VanSickle. Smith’s outstanding play enabled him to be
the first player ever to reach 1000 points on the WPGA Honor
Roll. This is the fourth year that Smith has been the area’s
number one amateur golfer.
In senior
golf, Paul Schlachter, Bridgeville, was named Player of the Year
for the fifth straight year, matching Bill Baloh, Herminie, who
did the same, 1999-2003. Schlachter, a member at Nevillewood,
was consistently ranked by Golfweek Magazine among the nation’s
top ten senior amateur golfers. Schlachter, who won the
Pennsylvania Match play, and was runner-up in the West Penn
Senior Amateur, edged Greensburg;’s Dave DeNezza, a member at
Totteridge, for the #1 spot on the Senior Honor Roll.
Easton
Renwick, Punxsutawney, edged Christopher Resnick, Venetia, and
Gregor Orlando, Erie, to take Junior Player of the Year honors.
Renwick, whose home club is Punxsutawney CC, won the WPGA;’s
Boys and C.R.Miller Match Play titles, and played on the
Association’s Williamson Cup team.
