Steve Wheatcroft, Washington, and
Jon Mills, Indiana, will play the
Nationwide Tour in 2009, after securing cards in PGA Tour
Qualifying at PGA
West, LaQuinta, California, on the Stadium and Nicklaus Courses,
December
3-8.
Wheatcroft recorded 72-64-71-68-73-69--417, tying for 37th,
missing the PGA
Tour by four strokes. The Stadium Course was his nemesis, as he
shot
72-71-73, while breaking 70 on the Nicklaus Course in all three
rounds.
Wheatcroft advanced to the finals by winning medalist honors in
both the
first and second stages. He played the PGA Tour in 2007. after
qualifying
seventh. Locally, he won the 2004 West Penn Open at
Westmoreland. In
college Wheatcroft played at Indiana University, making All
Big-Ten his
senior year.
Mills played the PGA Tour in 2008, winning nearly $490,000 for
154th on the
money list. At PGA West he shot 68-72-71-67-69-74--421, tying
for 70th.
Problems on the final holes put Mills over par, as he was even
through 15,
but he needed 67 on his final round to return to the PGA Tour.
Mills,
originally from Ontario, Canada, played his collegiate golf at
Kent State.
He advanced to the finals by qualifying in the second stage,
being exempt
from first stage due to his PGA Tour status. Mills played the
PGA Tour in
2008 after a top ten finish in 2007 on the Nationwide Tour's
money list.
