Steady play by Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, all rounds 69-72,
resulted in his winning the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr.
Invitational, for the second time at Pittsburgh Field Club.
His 70-71-69-72--282 edged John Aber, Allegheny, and Ryan
Sikora, Pittsburgh National, by two strokes. Finishing
fourth was Greensburg amateur Arnold Cutrell with
72-73-72-71--288, in his first competition of the year.
Other invited amateurs were first day leader Nathan
Sutherland, Oakmont, 5th, Sean Knapp, Oakmont; t-10th, and
David Brown, Upper St. Clair, 20th, as the contingent
finished in the top half of the field.
Smith has now won the WPGA's Spring Invitational and
Amateur, as well as the Fuhrer. He and Sikora were on the
same 1996 Williamson Cup team, another event sponsored by
Frank Fuhrer, Jr., for the Association. The WPGA team
finished one stroke shy of the victory. Other members were
Andy Latowski, who played for Penn State, and Jon Smarelli,
New Castle, who played college golf at Bowling Green. Smith
played at Allegheny, and Sikora, at Indiana University,
Pennsylvania, and all four had strong college careers.
