Schlachter wins 3rd WPGA

After moving out to a four stroke lead with a three
under-par 68 at Green Oaks, Paul Schlachter, Nevillewood,
survived putting woes in his second round 76 to edge 2007
champion Don Erickson, III, by two strokes. Erickson carded
74-72. The win gave Schlachter his third Senior Amateur
title, the
other two in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 he set the
championship's scoring record with 137 at Pittsburgh Field
Club.
Schlachter joins Phil Saylor (1998, 2001, and 2004) and
Arnold Horelick (1975, 1978, and 1981) as three times Senior
Amateur winners. Several in a the last 25 years have two
titles including Phil Saylor, Bill Baloh, Larry Barone, Rich
Jacob, and Tommy Smith. Leading the way with five titles are
Dr. George Gregg, with his in the 1930's and Joe Wells, Sr.,
who won five in a row, 1947-51.
