When John Jones and son
Derek shot 65 at Edgewood to win the 86th Father & Son on
July 23, he joined Jack Benson as the only players to win
this title with their fathers and their sons. John won the
1992 edition with his late father, Gary, then with son Derek
seventeen years later.
Jack Benson (1910-88) did Jones one better in the Father &
Son. He won in 1938 with his father, H.C., then with son
Jack, Jr., in 1954 and 1958, and with son George in 1963.
Jack Benson won six West Penn Amateurs, 1934-50, one Fred
Brand, three Four-Balls and four Father & Sons, fourteen
WPGA championships. Jones has won ten WPGA titles--Junior,
Open, Fred Brand, two Four-Balls, two Father & Sons, and
three Mid-Amateurs.
In overall wins, Jack Benson's fourteen ties him with
Pittsburgh's Nathan Smith and Oakmont's legendary William C.
Fownes. Ahead of Benson and Smith are Marshall Marraccini,
Youghiogheny, with sixteen and Sean Knapp, Saint Jude, with
28, thirteen in the Fred Brand Foursomes, including four
with Smith.
