Wexford's Mike Van Sickle, joins Nathan Smith, C.G.
Mercatoris, IV, and Trent Karlik at the USGA Amateur
Championship by qualifying in the Cincinnati Sectional on
August 3. His 146 put the recent Marquette University
graduate in a playoff for the final spot which he won at
Coldstream Country Club. His career record includes eleven
college titles and the 2009 Byron Nelson Award.
Van Sickle had played at the Nationwide Tour stop in
Columbus, Ohio, at the OSU Scarlet Course on Thursday and
Friday, July 30-31, missing the cut by one stroke at 143,
then moving on to Cincinnati for the Amateur Sectional.
The Championship will be played in Tulsa, Oklahoma, August
24-30, at Southern Hills CC & Cedar Ridge CC, with the match
play after 36 holes of stroke play qualifying at Southern
Hills. The club has held numerous USGA championhips, most
recently the 2001 Open, won by Retief Goosen, as well as the
2007 PGA Championship won by Tiger Woods.
