One of the strongest seasons any amateur from this area has
ever recorded resulted in Pittsburgh's Nathan Smith being
named to the USA's Walker Cup team. The USGA's International
Team Selection Committee announced eight team members on
August 9. The match will be played at Merion Golf Club,
Ardmore, Pennsylvania, September 12-13. In addition to his
local titles, including the West Penn Amateur for the third
straight year, Smith recorded top tens or their equivalents
in such prestigious amateur competitions as the Sunnehanna,
Northeast, Western, and Southern, plus a tie 13th in the
Porter Cup.
Smith is the first golfer named to the Walker Cup team from
Western Pennsylvania since Dick VonTacky and Frank Fuhrer,
III. Both made the 1981 squad. Other Walker Cuppers include
Jim Simons, Butler, 1971; S. Davidson Herron, Allegheny,
1923, and Oakmont's William C. Fownes, playing captain in
1922 and a team member 1924. Curtis Cup team members include
Carol Semple Thompson, eleven appearances, 1974-2002; Judy
Oliver, Allegheny, 1978, 1980, and 1982, and Jane Fassinger,
New Castle, 1970.
