in Walker Cup

Teaming twice with Oklahoma State standout Peter Uihlein,
Pittsburgh's Nathan Smith won two Foursomes matches in the
Walker Cup at Merion Golf Club, Ardmore, PA, September
12-13. On Saturday, the duo beat Great Britain and Ireland's
Gavin Dear & Matt Haines, 2&1. On Sunday, they easily
defeated Chris Paisley & Dale Whitnell, 5&4. In his singles
match on Sunday, Smith lost of Niall Kearney, 3&2. The USA
team won 16.5-9.5. Congratulations to Nathan Smith. For more

In 1981 at Cypress Point Club for the victorious USA team,
Frank Fuhrer, III, Pittsburgh, split two foursomes matches
and won his singles match, while Titusville's Dick VonTacky,
split his foursomes matches and lost in singles. In 1971,
Jim Simons, Butler, played at Saint Andrews, and lost both
his matches, foursomes and singles. However, while on the
trip he won the British Amateur at Muirfield. In 1923, S.
Davidson Herron, Allegheny, lost both matches, foursomes and
singles, at Saint Andrews, and in 1924, playing captain
William C. Fownes, Jr., Oakmont, split his foursomes matches
and lost his singles match at Garden City GC, Garden City,
NY. Frank Fuhrer, III, is the only player from this area to
win a singles match in the Walker Cup.
