The Association's team defeated the Tri-State
PGA in the annual Palmer Cup Match at Latrobe CC 9-8. It was
the WPGA's first win since the matches began to be played
annually in 1993. Earlier records are incomplete, but it's
likely this is the Association's only win the the history of
this rivalry. Last year's match was tied for the first time
at 8 1/2 each.
Led by victories in singles by Dave Brown, Dave DeNunzio,
Sean Knapp, Mike Marron, Robert Rohanna, and Nathan Smith,
plus a halved match by Andrew Rickard, the WPGA had a three
point lead at lunch, 6 1/2-3 1/2. However, the Section
rallied in the Four-Ball matches, with only WPGA teams led
by top players Smith with Marron, and Knapp with Rickard
being victorious. All was pointed to another tied match.
However, the 50-54 team of Rich DuCarme and Joe Corsi
rallied from three down with five holes to play for a halve
and the key point for the win. Corsi birdied the final hole
for the margin.
Leading the Association with two wins were Knapp and Smith,
while Dennis Dolci led the Section sweeping his two matches.
Arnold Palmer, recently having celebrated his 80th birthday,
did not compete this year, but he was on hand for most of
the day. He watched a few holes of every Four-Ball match,
and made well appreciated comments at the closing. Palmer
received a recognition plaque and birthday cake, one of many
in the
last week, at the ceremonies.
