Popeck leads West Penn Amateur

University of Maryland golfer and Washington native John Popeck leads after two rounds in the West Penn Amateur Championship at Sewickley Heights Golf Club. Popeck shot rounds of 66-74--140 and takes a one-shot lead into the final round. Tied at 141 are all previous champions: David Brown, 2004, Nathan Smith, 2007-09, and Sean Knapp, 1988 and 1998-2002. Brown recorded scores of 69-72, Smith 71-70, and Knapp 70-71.

Popeck, along with Ohio State's Rachel Rohanna, were this years recipients of the Frank Fuhrer, III Award for outstanding collegiate performance.

The 36-hole cut for the low 32 players and ties fell at 153, and 33 golfers will compete in the final round.
