Entries for the West Penn Amateur when it's at Oakmont are much higher than typical years, and 2011 is no exception. A total of 257 amateurs entered the Championship, three shy of the record 260 that entered the 1999 edition. Qualifying rounds begin on June 2 at Kane with 16 players and Lake View near Erie with 29. The following week finds 71 at Youghiogheny, McKeesport, on June 6, 19 at Scotch Valley near Altoona, on June 7, and 72 at Hannastown on June 8. The qualifiers will join the exempt players in the starting field of 84 at Oakmont on June 13. The two rounds on the first day will cut the field to 32 and ties for the third and final round.

After a few years of entries in the 60-65 range, the Mid-Amateur at Oak Tree CC in West Middlesex has a full field of 78 players. The one-day 36-hole competition will be held on Tuesday, May 31. Two of the nation's top mid-amateurs lead the field--defending champion Sean Knapp, Oakmont, and three-time USGA Mid-Amateur Champion, (2003, 2009, 2010), Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh.
