Schlachter's fourth Senior Amateur title - close to the top

Nevillewood's Paul Schlachter recorded 68-73--141 in the WPGA Senior Amateur at Williams CC, Weirton, WV, on June 27, winning his fourth title. The others occurrred in 2005, 2006, and 2009. His 137 at Pittsburgh Field Club in 2005 is the all-time scoring record.  In the history of the senior am, two are ahead of Schlachter with five titles. Oakmont's George T. Gregg, MD, won five times 1930-39, and Oakmont's Joe Wells won five in a row, 1947-51, at the same time Arnold Palmer won five of six West Penn Amateurs, 1947-52.  

Two more claim three--Shannopin's Knox Young, '64, '66, '70, and Sunnehanna's Phil Saylor, '98, '01, and '04.  Young also won the West Penn Amateur in 1933 and 1938. Several have won two Senior Amateurs including such standouts as Jim Crookston, Tommy Smith, Arnold Horelick, Larry Barone, and Bill Baloh. Winners of  both the West Penn Amateur and Senior Amateur are Crookston, a standout on Penn State's first golf team in the 20's, John Graham in the 20's & 30's, Knox Young in the 30's & 60's, and Tommy Smith in the 50's & 60's. Schlachter won the 1998 Pennsylvania Amateur.
