Led by Tom Nettles of McMurray and high
school team Trent McPherson, Venetia, the WPGA team finished
fourth in the
48th Williamson Cup Matches held at Columbia
Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md. The matches were hosted by
the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association.
The Metropolitan Golf Association
captured the event with scores of 223-214--437 for a ten
stroke victory over defending champion Washington Metro. The
WMGA finished 226-221--447. Finishing in third place 13
strokes back was the Golf Association of Philadelphia that
recorded 229-220--449. The Frank B. Fuhrer Team representing
the WPGA began the second round in eighth place (234) and
moved up four spots with a strong 223 in the afternoon round
for a 457 total.
Team Results - Final
Nettles was paired with medalist Clancy
Waugh of the Metropolitan Golf Association (73-69--142), and
finished T-8 with scores of 73-75--148. McPherson tied for
13th and posted scores of 81-71--152. Rounding out the WPGA
team were Garrett Browning of Coraopolis who recorded scores
of 80-77--157, and 2011 WPGA Junior Champion Brent Rodgers
of Cranberry Township with a score of 167 (82-85).
Individual Results - Final
The Williamson Cup Matches are an
annual competition with teams from ten associations from the
northeast United States and Canada competing in a thirty-six
hole college format (low 3 of 4 counted in each round). The
Quebec Golf Association did not compete this year.
