Greensburg’s Dave Denezza reached the third round of the USGA Senior Amateur at Shady Oaks GC, Fort Worth, Texas, where he lost of Randy Nichols, Connersville, Indiana, 1-up. Nichols, two down after twelve holes, played the last six holes in three under par to defeat Denezza, who bogeyed the 18th hole. Both players were under par in the well played match.

John Benson, Punxutawney, also qualified for match play with 73-75—148, and he lost to 2002 USGA Mid-Amateur champion George Zahringer, New York, NY, in the first round 2&1. Zahringer also beat Benson in the third round of the 2001 USGA Mid-Amateur in Fresno, CA.

In the Senior Women’s Amateur at Tulsa CC, four time (1999-2002) champion Carol Semple Thompson, Sewickley, reached the quarterfinals where she lost to medalist Carolyn Creekmore, Dallas, 7&6.
