Gibsonia's Mike Van Sickle, Treesdale, won his third and fourth collegiate tournaments of the Fall in November, both with late heroics.
The Marquette University senior won the Pacific Invitational at Brookside CC, Stockton, California, with 70-70-69 - 209, November 2-4. Van Sickle birdied his final four holes to garner a one-stroke victory.
For the second year, Van Sickle was invited to the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, played at El Paso CC, Texas. The starting field of 26 featured the best collegiate golfers in the nation, a rare individual collegiate tournament. After opening with 74-70, Van Sickle rallied for a final round 63, resulting in a play-off with Trent Leon, Oklahoma State. He birdied the sixth hole with a seven-foot putt to win the title. Penn State's Kevin Foley tied for fifth.
The competition began in 1974 as the Sun Bowl Intercollegiate. Its winners include major champions Jerry Pate, Scott Simpson, Davis Love, III, Tiger Woods, and David Duval.
