Nathan Smith, Pittsburgh, became the fourth player in Association history to win the West Penn Open and West Penn Amateur in the same year, equalling the achievements of fellow USGA champions, William C. Fownes, Oakmont (Amateur), Eben Byers, Allegheny, and Jim Masserio, Duquesne (Junior Amateur). Smith won the 2003 USGA Mid-Amateur.

Mike VanSickle, Wexford, won both the 2008 Pennsylvania Open and Amateur titles. The only other amateur to win both state titles is the legendary Jay Sigel, Beryn, who won both in 1974 and 1979. According to Golf World Magazine's records these two are unique in 2008. No player other than VanSickle won both the state open and amateurs in 2008.
