Writer John Updike died yesterday. He was a passionate golfer whom the USGA invited to speak at their 1994 Centennial Dinner, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Among his observations were " . . . Would American golf be less happy if a bit less money were to wash through the grand old game?"
