MILWAUKEE - Marquette University senior Mike Van Sickle has been named 2009 BIG EAST Player of the Year. Van Sickle was a unanimous selection for the conference's top award, while both he and classmate Dustin Schwab were named to the 11-person All-BIG EAST squad, league officials announced Thursday.

"These are very well-deserved honors for the both of them," Marquette head coach Tim Grogan said of his only two seniors on this year's team. "To have two players represented on the all-conference team is a credit to the Marquette golf program, and it's a reflection of our team's success this past year."

Van Sickle, who earned BIG EAST Golfer of the Week recognition on three occasions this spring, has recorded a school-record 11 collegiate victories and his five wins this year leads all of NCAA Division I. He currently leads the nation in scoring average (69.67), birdies (160), sub-par strokes per round (5.33) and par-4 scoring (3.94), among other statistical categories.

"Mike Van Sickle is clearly one of, if not the best, players in the country this year," Grogan said. "It's fitting that he would be honored as BIG EAST Player of the year. I think Marquette and the BIG EAST should be very proud of his accomplishments."

In 10 collegiate events, Schwab managed a scoring average of 74.13 this year, which ranks as the ninth lowest single-season average in the MU record books. Only three other Golden Eagles (Van Sickle, Ted Gray, Nathan Colson) have had better single-season averages since 1993 when the record first started being kept. Schwab's career average of 75.51 also ranks among the program's top-10.

"This is a very nice way to cap Dusty's career at Marquette," Grogan said. "He has been a very steady player for us and this recognition captures what he's done overall as a player throughout the season."

During their respective careers, the duo has helped Marquette win three team titles, including a victory at the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship, and helped lead the Golden Eagles to the their first NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship that the same season. This past week, Marquette finished runner-up to BIG EAST champion Louisville.
